Governor Malombe Assures Kitui of Water Security

Kitui governor HE. Dr. Julius Malombe has reiterated his government’s key agenda of making Kitui county water secure during his tenure.

Addressing members of the press yesterday, after flagging off 164 water tanks for domestic irrigation and 115 Gala goats donated by the Korean International Development Agency, the governor assured the public of his government’s commitment to ensure water security all over the county.

Governor Malombe disclosed that he had talked about the water security issue with the president when he visited Ciambiu in Tharaka ward and the national government is in the process of initiating two mega water projects in Mwingi, namely: the Kiambere-Mwingi water project which is financed by the Italians; and the Kindaruma-Kiomo-Mwingi and Migwani water pipeline project.

“Plans are also underway to resume the construction of Umaa mega dam in Kitui Central,” added the governor.

Kitui South has already benefitted from the Kangu-kangu water project which was completed earlier this year.

Machakos County Holds 1st Africa Youth Summit on Food Systems, amid Calls for Syncronization of Agricultural Policies between Three Ukambani Counties

May 29th, 2023, Machakos

The Alliance for Food Sovereignty in Africa (AFSA) held a youth  summit with members drawn from more than 15 African Countries at the Maanzoni Safari Lounge in Machakos County today.

The meeting was attended by Dr. Stephen Mbaya Kimwele, Bishop Dr. Nzomo and Joyce Mutua, the County Ministers in charge of Agriculture from Kitui, Machakos and Makueni Counties respectively.

AFSA is a broad alliance of civil
society actors who are part of the struggle for food sovereignty and agroecology in Africa.

These include African food producer networks, African CSO networks, indigenous people’s
organizations, faithbased organizations, women and youth groups, consumer movements,
and international organizations that support the stance of AFSA.

It is in simpler definitions a network of networks,
currently with 40 active members in 50 African countries.

AFSA aims at transitioning to agroecology for climate, strengthening farmer managed seed systems, strengthening community voices for land rights.

The Agriculture and Livestock CECMs and AFSA discussed on possible areas of collaboration between the three counties to promote and safeguard agricultural production through creation of healthy policies and legislation.

National Public Petitions Committee Gears Up for Desilting of Matinga Dam

The National Public Petitions Committee today held a consultative meeting with the Kitui governor Dr. Julius Malombe to discuss the process of desilting Matinga Dam in Kitui West.

Following a petition tabled in the National Assembly by the Kitui West MP Hon. Edith Nyenze, who is also a member of the committee, the team is seeking to have the dam resurrected so that the communities around can reap from the major dam. The community lobby group dubbed Desilting Matinga Lobby Group, and  led by former senatorial aspirant Elijah Kilonzi aka Ikonge, has been presurizing for the desilting of the dam that filled up with silt in the early 90’s.

Speaking to the media after meeting with the governor and county commissioner, the committee Chairman Hon Nimrod Mbai (also the MP Kitui East) affirmed that the committee will do everything they can to make sure that Matinga Dam is desilted.

He revealed that despite Matinga Dam being a priority in governor Malombe’s manifesto, it would cost between 1.3 to 1.5 billion shillings to remove silt from the dam, a figure that overshoots the county annual water budget.

Hon. Mbai however expressed confidence that the project would kick off through joint funding by other government agencies involved in water projects.

“We have approached the Water Storage Authority over the matter and we are assured of their support,” Said Hon. Mbai.

The committee also promised they will push for donor funding through the Water Trust Funds Authority.

The 11 member delegation included: the petitioner and Kitui West mp Hon. Edith Nyenze; the committee Chairman Hon Nimrod Mbai of Kitui East; Hon. Susan Kiamba of Makueni constituency; Hon. Caleb Mule mp Machakos; Hon. Marua of Kuria East; the director Water Storage Authority; and and a five-member technical team.

The Public Petitions Committee is a committee of the National Assembly charged with handling all public petitions in the August House.
